Wakefield Trinity finally lose and relegation threatened side land huge upset

Round 16 of Rugby League’s Championship is in the books and it’s been a very eventful week with leaders Wakefield Trinity finally losing their first game in the competition following last year’s relegation from Super League.

Wakefield Trinity actually lost yesterday with Daryl Powell’s side on the road against fellow high-flyers Toulouse Olympique who put them to the sword and won 32-4. It ended a huge winning streak that dates back to early March when Trin lost to rivals Featherstone Rovers in the Challenge Cup.

Following that golden point defeat on a mud-caked pitch at Post Office Road, Wakefield Trinity had won 17 games on the bounce including victory at Wembley in the 1895 Cup Final against Sheffield Eagles.

Hopes are high at Wakefield this season with the club holding Super League aspirations with the aim of becoming a “top four” Super League side and that’s been reflected in their aggressive recruitment, signing five players so far in Tom Johnstone, Mike McMeeken, Cam Scott , Ollie Russell and most recently Corey Hall.

Despite those ambitions, Powell’s side still have to get there and winning the Championship Grand Final after finishing first will add vital IMG points to help that goal, meaning yesterday’s defeat could have major repercussions.

Wakefield Trinity are still flying clear at the top of the Championship by seven points from their opponents this weekend, Toulouse. The French side ran out as 32-4 victors in the game with English full-back Olly Ashall-Bott scoring a first-half hattrick in the win.

Trinity weren’t the only high flyers to lose though as second-place Sheffield Eagles dropped to third after losing for a second week in a row, this time to relegation-threatened Barrow Raiders. It marked the second week in a row that the Eagles have lost as heavy favorites with Swinton Lions upsetting the odds as 15/2 winners last week, whilst Barrow’s 8-6 win came as 4/1 underdogs today.

Playoff hopefuls Featherstone Rovers were also victims of an upset with promoted side Doncaster RFLC beating them 24-12 as 7/1 outsiders themselves. Former Castleford Tigers man Buretta Faraimo scored a brace whilst ex-Trinity player Reece Lyne got on the scoresheet too.

Bradford Bulls were one of the few favorites who won and they were able to make ground on both Sheffield and Wakefield with their 36-28 victory over in-form York Knights lifting them within two points of Toulouse in second.

Widnes maintained the pressure on the Vikings with a win on the road against Halifax Panthers who now sit solely on 10 points and in the relegation zone after the aforementioned win for Barrow and one for Whitehaven who beat Swinton Lions.

It means that there is a trio of teams on 12 points just ahead of Fax, all battling it out to avoid the dreaded drop. Bottom side Dewsbury look certain to go back down to League One with just one win all season and despite pushing Batley close, they lost 29-22 to leave them ten points adrift from safety.
