Aston Villa transfer link resurfaces as they weigh up striker addition

Aston Villa have been linked with a move for Kelechi Iheanacho this summer – and that link has continued to rise as Villa consider how they might proceed in the final six weeks or so of the transfer window. Villa have been as busy as any Premier League team so far this summer, making six signings – a number that does not include returning pair Cameron Archer and Kosta Nedeljkovic, nor the imminent arrival of Amadou Onana.

However, others could follow the likes of Douglas Luiz, Calum Chambers, Moussa Diaby, Philippe Coutinho and Tim Iroegbunam; One such player is Jhon Duran, who has interested Chelsea and West Ham United and would appear free to leave the club should the Lions receive a suitable offer.

Signing forwards who are proven and have the right quality but are equally content to play second fiddle to a colleague – in Villa’s case, undisputed first-choice centre-forward Ollie Watkins – is hard to come by. Iheanacho, a Nigerian international who has been around for a while but is still only 27, would tick a few of those boxes.

He spent seven years at Leicester City, contributing 95 goals in 232 appearances for the Foxes, moving from Manchester City in 2017, but was released at the end of his contract this summer after helping the club return to the Premier League First league. trial under the late Enzo Maresca.

Iheanacho is looking for a new club and Villa – who were touted as a potential destination earlier in the summer – have been linked again. Much will depend on how the coming weeks hold for Duran, who has been away with his native Colombia, whom he helped reach the Copa America final, and is currently on holiday.
