‘Playful’ road sign sparks outrage as locals say it’s ‘absurd’

  • The speed limit sign is located in the village of Tuckingmill, Cornwall

A road sign in Cornwall has been criticized for its “high” placement, with local residents seething at the situation.

The speed limit sign, which is located in the village of Tuckingmill, near Camborne, has been blasted for its placement in the middle of a footpath.

A local resident, Mr Berry, labeled the situation “absolutely ridiculous” as he was quick to point out the inconvenience it was causing to pedestrians and families in the area.

He said the choice to build a sign in such a place was “most absurd” – adding it was an obstacle to everyday activities.

In response to the backlash from local residents, Cornwall Council said it would remove the sign and place it elsewhere in the local area.

The speed limit sign, which is located in the village of Tuckingmill, near Camborne, has been blasted for its placement in the middle of a footpath.

A spokesman for Cormac, a Cornwall Council company, said: “We are implementing the 20mph limit scheme in Camborne, Pool, Illogan and Redruth to make the roads safer, healthier and greener for everyone.

“Although we have installed a significant number of new road signs, the sign in Tuckingmill was positioned incorrectly.

“We have already identified this issue and the post will be relocated to a more appropriate location. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.’

Reacting in the comments section of regional publication Cornwall to the placement of the sign, others agreed that it was an error to place it on the pavement, as they wrote:

“The sign is not for drivers, it’s for electric scooters and cyclists, because that’s where they go all the time…”

‘I agree with you! I find myself moving off the pavement and onto the road because of them.’

“Exactly why motorcyclists need a scooter, another hurdle to negotiate. Come on Cornwall Council – WAKE UP AND USE COMMON SENSE.

“Why don’t they hire staff with common sense? It should have been obvious to normal people that it wasn’t the right place.

“Money to install it – wasted. Money to remove it and restore the surface – wasted and then have to start again.

It comes after Southampton City Council banned local residents from parking in their own driveways as they have to mount curbs and cross pavements to access their homes.

For 50 years, Ed Fisher and his wife had no problem parking their two cars in front of their house until they and neighbor Treena Smart received a threatening letter three weeks ago.

Ed Fisher (pictured), 78, said he was ‘furious’ at Southampton City Council after he and his neighbor were told they would have to pay a £1.3k bill pounds for a slack curb.
Mr Fisher has now been told he cannot park on his driveway (right) as it means he will have to fit the council-owned curb to do so.

Mr Fisher, 78, told MailOnline: ‘We have used our driveway to park our two cars for 50 years until two weeks ago.

“We have to be responsible for paying for the fallen curb ourselves! It smacks of “we don’t have much to do so we’ll go get them”.

“All those years I parked there, I used to put little pieces of wood to help me get up on the curb. The council pointed out that it was an obstruction and had to be removed.

“What bugs me is that they spend time doing this and there are a lot of other problems here, like potholes.

“The only way this is going to end is if we get a curb dropped. You have to pay so much just to get a quote.

“I hope our neighbors get letters, they shouldn’t have identified us.”
