Major disruption is expected as Sheffield Tram stops running

Major travel disruption is expected in Sheffield later this month as tram services in the city center are suspended for nine days.

Supertram has announced that track replacement work will begin on Friday 24 May with no services between Fitzalan Square, Ponds Forge and University. West Street, City Hall, Cathedral and Castle Square tram stations will also not be served.

The station at Netherthorpe Road will also be closed while work is carried out to replace the tram shelters. Supertram said the multi-million pound project would “future-proof and extend the life of the network”. A revised timetable and replacement transport will be in operation.

The work will start after the last tram of the evening on Friday 24 May and is scheduled to be completed in time for services to resume as normal on Monday 3 June. Further work is planned in other areas of the tramway. network during the summer.

Melanie Corcoran, chief executive of transport at South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, said: “These essential works are vital to extend the life of the Supertram network. Every effort is being made to minimize impact and keep people moving while this work progresses.

“By replacing the track, we are ensuring the region’s tram network can continue to safely provide the popular service for generations to come.” Supertram was brought back under public control in March this year for the first time since 1997.
