Maya’s mum Jama sends fans wild as she appears on spin-off show Love Island

Maya Jama joined her mum in the Love Island Aftersun studio just days after confirming her split from Stormzy.

The 29-year-old presenter announced on Wednesday (July 17) that she and the 30-year-old rapper had ended their relationship in a message to fans on social media.

Their joint statement read: “I laughed as I wrote this article because I never, ever in a million years thought we would be the couple announcing a split, but for the sake of clarity and more importantly for to allow ourselves the Space and grace we need so that the two of us can peacefully navigate this next part of our lives, we thought it would be best to do.”

Describing their relationship, Maya wrote: “We fell madly in love in 2014, broke up in 2019 and then spent five years managing our separate lives.”

On Sunday (July 21), Maya returned to her presenting duties on the live spin-off show, where she introduced viewers to her mum Sadie, who was in the studio. The camera then showed Sadie, who was smiling proudly, reports OK!.

Fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express their surprise at Sadie’s youthful appearance. One fan wrote: “Mama Maya Jamas is GORG!” Another said: “Maya IS THAT THE MOM? Wow”.

A third person commented: “Wow Maya’s mom makes sense.” Maya was born and raised in Bristol by her mother, Sadie, who gave birth to her at the age of 18. Sadie, of Swedish descent, named her Maya after the famous American author and poet, Maya Angelou, while Maya’s father, Hussein, is of Somali descent.

Sadie made another appearance alongside her famous daughter in All Round To Mrs Brown’s Boys. Maya has a close bond with her mother and her brother, Omar.

In an interview with Marie Claire magazine, Maya expressed her gratitude that her mother has found a new partner who treats her well. She credits her stepfather for showing her what a truly loving relationship looks like, as her biological father was not around much during her childhood due to his frequent stints in prison.

Maya often talks about her strong bond with her mother. In an interview with the Evening Standard, she even suggested that their smaller age gap has brought them even closer over the years.
