Live as A61 Barnsley Road crash kills six people including two children

Emergency services have rushed to the scene of a terrible crash in Barnsley this afternoon. In a terrible update this evening, the police revealed that six people, including two children, have been killed.

The A61 Barnsley Road in Mapplewell has been closed in both directions following the accident from the B6428 to Warren Lane. Traffic system Inrix says traffic was queuing.




South Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service say they are both at the scene, with the road expected to be closed this evening.

A statement from West Yorkshire Police said: “Six people, including four adults and two children, have died in a collision between Wakefield and Barnsley this afternoon (21/7). The collision, which involved two vehicles, happened on the A61 Barnsley Road between Staincross, Barnsley, and Newmillerdam, Wakefield.

“Emergency services received reports of the incident which involved a Ford Focus car and a motorcycle at 3.54pm.

“A motorcyclist and pillion passenger, one male and one female, were confirmed dead at the scene. An adult male and female, and two children, one male and one female, who were traveling in the car, were also confirmed dead at the scene.”


Inrix said: “A61 Barnsley Road in both directions closed, queuing traffic due to accident from B6428 to Warren Lane.”

Six people, including two children, have died in a collision between a car and a motorbike on the A61 between Wakefield and BarnsleyWest Yorkshire Police said.

A statement from West Yorkshire Police said: “Six people, including four adults and two children, have died in a collision between Wakefield and Barnsley this afternoon (21/7).

“The collision, which involved two vehicles, happened on the A61 Barnsley Road between Staincross, Barnsley, and Newmillerdam, Wakefield.

“Emergency services received reports of the incident which involved a Ford Focus car and a motorcycle at 3.54pm.

“A motorcyclist and pillion passenger, one male and one female, were confirmed dead at the scene.

“An adult male and female, and two children, one male and one female, who were traveling in the car, were also confirmed dead at the scene.”

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue are on the scene

In a post on X, it said: “We are currently in attendance to a road traffic collision on Wakefield Road, Barnsley. Please avoid the area and make note of the below road closures.”

Road to be closed until this evening

In a post on X, South Yorkshire Police said: “Please be advised that Wakefield Road in #Barnsley is closed between the junctions with Warren Lane and Shaw Lane. This is due to a road traffic collision and the closure is expected to remain in place into the evening to allow emergency services to work at the scene.

“We’re asking members of the public to find alternative routes and plan ahead where possible. Thank you for your understanding.”
