Enzo Maresca has already worked with a goalkeeper who is perfect for Chelsea’s revolution

Chelsea are reportedly keen to sign a goalkeeper this summer – and new head coach Enzo Maresca knows just the man.

Despite spending the better part of £40m signing Djordje Petrovic and Robert Sanchez in the last 12 months, the club are understood to be on the lookout for another. Maresca is no stranger to changing goalkeepers after arriving at a new club.

A month after becoming Leicester City manager, the club signed Mads Hermansen to replace Daniel Iversen, who finished the previous season in the Premier League as first choice. History could now repeat itself just one year later.

Days after The Telegraph reported that Sanchez was set to start ahead of Petrovic, whose immediate future now appears in doubt, Daily mail noted that Maresca is an admirer of Hermansen. Leicester are said to value the goalkeeper, who has four years left on his contract, at £15m more than the £30m they accepted for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

But it’s clear how well Maresca rates the Danish international. “We won a lot of games this year because of Mads,” he said Leicestershire live in April after a 2-1 home win over Birmingham City in which the goalkeeper made a mistake to give the visitors a goal. “It can happen. What can’t happen is that he starts playing long balls. We scored a lot of goals because of the way we started with Mads.

“For me, Mads was fantastic in the second half. He wasn’t nervous, but the people in the stadium were more nervous than him, for sure. But what I told him: “The second half, when we play with you, if you play a lot, you go out. Continue in the same way. He showed personality. He kept playing short.”
