In one of the upsets of the season, Hull FC managed to beat Wigan Warriors 24-22, the victory marking just the third win for the Black and Whites, while ending Wigan’s winning run which stretched back to early May.

Ironically, the last time Wigan Warriors were beaten was at Hull, FC’s rivals beating Matt Peet’s side 26-10 at Craven Park in round nine of the Super League. Wigan have since avenged that in the semi-final of the Challenge Cup and have gone on a ten-game run in which they have conceded an average of less than eight points per game.

Hull FC made it treble yesterday with their 24 points, the second most Wigan Warriors have conceded all season, even more than against NRL champions Penrith in the World Club Challenge.

Wigan’s slow start allowed Hull FC to capitalize with Jack Walker opening the scoresheet on his return to the side. Liam Marshall hit back but crosses from Liam Sutcliffe and Davy Litten put the home side ahead at the break.

Tyler Dupree’s ill-discipline saw him sin-binned and allowed FC to score again with the man advantage and while Wigan fought back, it was the missed conversion in the first half that cost them as they lost 24-22 .

Despite not being one to comment after defeat, Wigan Warriors’ Matt Peet spoke gracefully, labeling the Black and White’s performance outstanding.

Castleford’s win at St Helens a few weeks ago might still be a bigger upset, but there’s no denying what a huge win this was for Hull FC, a testament to the work Simon Grix is doing at the club.

It could also be seen as a fallout from Wigan’s incredibly hard-fought win in the St Helens derby last week, a game of attrition that may help explain the sub-par performances of both Saints and Wigan .

Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet made no excuses as he told BBC Radio Manchester: “We were below our best, but that’s partly because Hull FC played tremendously well. They finished their sets very well and defended with energy.

“They played with desperation, a desperation that we lacked, disappointingly.”

Peet also noted the value of the lessons of defeat for some of the club’s younger stars, who rarely suffered defeat in their careers while wearing Wigan colours.

It marked the first loss of Jack Farrimond’s five-game career in the Cherry and White, just Zach Eckersley’s second and Junior Nsemba’s sixth, despite the second-rower playing 32 times for the club.

Peet noted: “There’s some valuable lessons there for guys like Junior (Nsemba), Jack (Farrimond) and Zach (Eckersley), all our players really, they’re not pretty when they come, those lessons.

“When we look back on it, to lose a two-point game, we’re going to see a lot of areas where those two points could be picked up.”

They face Warrington Wolves next week in a huge clash at the top of the table with a heavy defeat meaning Wigan Warriors will not be top of Super League.
