Leny Yoro makes the decision to transfer to Manchester United amid interest from Real Madrid

Lilla defender Leny Yoro has agreed to join Manchester United in a deal worth €70m (£58.7m)

United received a €62m (£52m) bid from Lille last week and the 18-year-old has decided to join the club despite interest from Real Madrid.

Yoro, 18, is set to become United’s second signing of the summer after Joshua Zirkzee arrived from Bologna in a £36.5m move.

The deal will take United’s spending to £95.2m for the summer, with more revenue expected as they look to sell more squad members.

United are open to signing up to three centre-backs as part of a drastic overhaul of their defence. The club have verbally agreed personal terms with Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt and had two bids rejected by Everton for Jarrad Branthwaite.

Yoro is likely to be available to travel with United to Los Angeles for their pre-season tour next week.

The teenager’s transfer has parallels with Raphael Varane’s dilemma as a teenager at another northern French club, Lens, in 2011. United moved for Varane, but he chose to join Madrid after an intervention by the club’s ambassador, Zinedine Zidane.

United manager Erik ten Hag now has five centre-backs to choose from after Jonny Evans signed a new one-year contract last week. Lisandro Martinez was on international duty with Argentina at the Copa America and is unlikely to feature in United’s pre-season programme.

United are proactively trying to sell Victor Lindelof, who has entered the final year of his contract and has no option for an additional year. Harry Maguire is out of contract next year but United could extend his deal until 2027.
