Portsmouth and Preston target Marc Leonard wanted abroad

Portsmouth and Preston North End target Marc Leonard has appeared on the radar of Legia Warsaw and Sturm Graz, according to a report from the Daily Record.

The Brighton and Hove Albion man is attracting interest from abroad ahead of the summer. He has spent the last two seasons on loan at Northampton Town and has impressed with the Cobblers.

Leonard, 22, is back at the AMEX Stadium now and the Seagulls have a big decision to make about his future in the upcoming transfer window amid interest from other teams. His contract with the Premier League side expires in June 2025, meaning he has over a year left.

According to the Daily Record, Legia Warsaw and Sturm Graz are keen, while Portsmouth and Preston have also been mentioned again as potential suitors. Football Insider claimed earlier this month that newly relegated Sheffield United as well as Hull City were also admirers.

Who is this?

THE QUIZ STARTS!

Leonard has caught the eye at Northampton Town over the last two campaigns and it is no surprise that he is now a man in demand.

The former Scotland youth international helped them win promotion from League Two in his first year and has since adapted well to life in League One. He made 97 appearances for Jon Brady’s side in all competitions to fuel his development, contributing six goals.

He was on the books at Rangers and Hearts as a youngster before Brighton lured him over the border in 2018.

Leonard has since featured twice for the Seagulls’ first team, but his chances of fully breaking into their starting XI under Roberto de Zerbi in the top flight are slim, meaning an exit looks likely in the future near.

Portsmouth are preparing for life in the second tier under John Mousinho and could see him as someone to strengthen their midfield.

Preston, meanwhile, could do with a bit more quality in the middle of the park and with Alan Browne’s situation up in the air, they may have identified Leonard as a possible long-term replacement in the middle of the park.

Sheffield United and Hull City are other clubs linked and both will be eyeing promotion in the coming period.

European interest?

Legia Warsaw and Sturm Graz could offer Leonard a chance to play in Europe.

The chance to move to another country might be something they consider.

Legia is the most successful team in Poland and has won the title 15 times as well as 20 Polish Cups.

As for Sturm Graz, they have won the Austrian Bundesliga three times in the past and played in the Champions League as well as the Europa League.
