The common household item “makes limescale disappear in less than two minutes” from the kettle

Limescale often affects our toilets, taps, washing machines and kettles. The appearance of stubborn white deposits tells us it’s time to descale items like the kettle, but getting rid of it can be difficult.

Many people turn to the trusty bottle of white vinegar, favored for its moderate acidity, while vinegar and lemons are praised for managing pesky mineral buildup in kettles. Baking soda is also frequently suggested as another way to permanently remove limescale, but another solution has come to the fore, reports the Express.

The hack appeared on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook group, where multiple people can save a single person. The original post made it clear that despite trying lemon juice and other typical limescale tricks, it stayed.

The poster said: “It probably doesn’t look that bad, but I’d better get it off completely. I’ve already tried lemon juice and also Oust descaler. Thanks a lot.”

Several suggested white vinegar, but others said to avoid it because of its smell. Another top tip popped up on Facebook – citric acid.

Paula Henderson was among those in favor of it, saying it was simple but effective. She said: “Just add a tablespoon of citric acid, boil the kettle and leave it for a while, it works 100% every time and leaves no taste or smell.”

Vanessa Birch agreed, saying: “Tsp of citric acid straight into just boiled water and the limescale disappears instantly.” Jen Sarah was the third to boast about the benefits of citric acid. She said: “Boil water, add a tablespoon or two of citric acid and leave until the limescale is removed. It doesn’t last at all.”
