(MENAFN) On Sunday afternoon there was a devastating road accident between Wakefield and Barnsley which resulted in the tragic loss of six lives. The collision took place on the A61 Barnsley Road and involved a Ford Focus car and a motorbike. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene shortly before 4pm, responding to reports of the crash.

The accident resulted in the immediate death of a motorcyclist and a passenger, both of whom were pronounced dead at the scene. In addition, four other people lost their lives: a man, a woman and two young girls, all traveling in the car involved in the collision. The identities of the victims have not yet been released as authorities work to notify their families.

In response to the accident, the A61 Barnsley Road was closed between Shaw Lane and Warren Lane. West Yorkshire Police have indicated that this closure will remain in place for an extended period while a thorough investigation is carried out to determine the cause of the accident. Superintendent Alan Travis of Wakefield District Police expressed his deep sadness at the incident, describing it as “absolutely tragic” and underlining the profound impact of six lives being lost in such a devastating manner. The ongoing investigation will aim to clarify how such a serious collision occurred and address any contributing factors.
