Sam Eseh’s Leeds Rhinos future clarified as Wigan Warriors loan decision made

Leeds Rhinos will extend the loan deal of Wigan Warriors prop Sam Eseh this week. The young striker has spent the last month at Headingley, starting in the club’s recent matches against Warrington Wolves and Hull KR.

Eseh joined the club on an initial one-month loan, which ended on Sunday. However, Rugby League Live has learned that the clubs have agreed to extend the loan period, meaning he will remain in high school when the Rhinos travel to Huddersfield Giants on Thursday.

It is a boost for head coach Brad Arthur, who is without a number of forwards including Tom Holroyd, Mickael Goudemand and Justin Sangare. Holroyd currently faces an indefinite spell on the sidelines, with Goudemand set to miss another three to five weeks of action, while no time frame has been set for Sangare’s return after picking up a knee injury.

The 21-year-old, who Wigan signed from Wakefield Trinity in the off-season, has made 19 Super League appearances throughout his career, four of them coming for the Rhinos. He produced a positive display in their defeat to the Robins on Saturday.

Thursday’s game against the Giants is a significant one for the Rhinos, who can close the gap on the top six to two points if they can secure a win. That said, defeat to Huddersfield, who did Leeds a favor by beating Salford last week, would be a potentially fatal blow to their stuttering play-off ambitions.
