Man charged with attempted murder on Croydon tram

A man has been charged with attempted murder after a passenger on a Croydon tram was hospitalized with multiple stab wounds.

Andrew Mullings, 40, is accused of trying to kill Bright Chukwu on a tram on July 18 as it traveled between Sandilands and Lloyd Park.

Mullings, whose address is given by the YMCA in Croydon, is charged with attempted murder as well as possession of two knives and a meat cleaver.

He appeared at Highbury Corner Crown Court on Saturday to face the charges for the first time.

Mullings did not enter a plea as the case was sent to the Old Bailey, with the next hearing set for August 16.

After the incident, which happened at around 6.45pm, Croydon Police said the victim suffered stab wounds to the face, stomach, arm and leg.

The investigation was handed over from the Met officers who were first on the scene to British Transport Police.

Chief Superintendent Andy Brittain, who is in charge of policing in south London for the Met, posted on social media that officers “dealt with a chaotic scene, providing first aid to the victim and rapid investigations leading to the arrest of the suspect.

“An example of the great work our officers undertake every day.

“Our thoughts are obviously with the victim who is recovering in hospital at this time.

“We should also not lose sight of the impact these incidents have on officers and other emergency services.

“My heartfelt thanks to these amazing emergency responders.”

Mullings was remanded in custody until his next court appearance.
