Lee Briers’ next career decision confirmed as he heads to Super League

Former Warrington Wolves and St Helens player and ex-Wigan Warriors manager Lee Briers has confirmed he will return to England to pursue a coaching opportunity in 2025.

Briers began his career at St Helens but made just six appearances for his boyhood club, but with the pressure on Paul Wellens, there was a desire among fans for him to take the top job. He has previously stated that he is “ready to be a head coach,” but it is still unclear whether he will take on a head coaching or assistant coaching role.

He then spent his career at Warrington Wolves, playing over 400 games in Primrose and Blue before moving into coaching, becoming the club’s youth coach before moving up to first team assistant.

Lee Briers then moved to Wigan, where he will help guide the club to 2022 Challenge Cup success before the NRL comes calling. While down, he was widely credited as the man behind the transformation of the Brisbane Broncos attack.

He also previously rejected offers from Hull FC, who instead hired fellow Broncos assistant John Cartwright as head coach for 2025. It is now confirmed that Lee Briers will also be heading to England, although it is expected as an assistant.

News of Lee Briers’ return to England has been confirmed by his club who have shared a statement announcing the news.

It read: “Broncos assistant manager Lee Briers has informed the club that he will return home to England once his contract expires at the end of the 2024 season.

“Briers, who made 425 Super League appearances in the UK before moving through the managerial ranks at Warrington and Wigan, has done an outstanding job since joining the Broncos at the start of the 2023 season.

“The 46-year-old has played a key role as part of head coach Kev Walters’ coaching staff with a focus on offensive strategy and player development.”

Lee Briers himself commented on the exit as he explained: “It was a very difficult decision to come home but first and foremost I want to thank Kev and the Broncos for giving me this opportunity – it doesn’t happen often to have an English coach come in and ply his trade in the NRL, so many thanks to Kev and (CEO) Dave (Donaghy) and the club for taking a chance.

“I’m sad to be leaving but our family has dealt with a loss last year and now is the time to come home – we still have our daughter who lives in the UK and we miss her so it’s the right time . to come back.

“We are forever grateful and will look back on these two years as one of the best experiences of our lives.
