Sheffield wine shop and bar Grub Records launches Crowdfunder ahead of opening

A new record store and wine bar, Grub Records, is set to open in Sheffield soon.

The project has been years in the making, according to the team of DJs and promoters behind setting up the space, which hopes to become a hub for area record seekers.

To help with the final part of the opening process, the venue has launched a Crowdfunder campaign with the initial aim of raising £2,500. “Donating here will help us get started and allow us to stock the store with a wider selection of the best re-releases, reissues and compilations, complementing the second-hand stock we offer from our collections,” a note. said on the Crowdfunder page.

“Overall we’ve donated around £10,000 worth of equipment, records and money, but helping us get up and running faster will mean a wider range of genres on the shelves from day one, allowing us to we diversify the selection of styles available and create a space with something for everyone.”

The space includes a custom DJ booth designed and built by the Grub Records team themselves, with indoor sound provided by a pair of Tannoy Westminster monitors supplied by one of the owners.

Crowdfunder adds: “Your early support here can help us bring you the best version of Grub. While we share the space with the wine bar, revenue from alcohol sales is separate and does not go towards running the record store. – which is usually where a business like ours generates most of its revenue. This is a positive arrangement for us as it helps us keep record store costs down, but it means we don’t have access to a quick early revenue stream. .

“Record stores aren’t usually a gold mine, but their value is in the spaces they create and the local music scenes they add to and support.”

You can support Grub Records as it gets going, including by signing up for a subscription, here.

In May, a new record store opened in London when Next Door Records opened a second branch. That new store followed another record store opening in London late last year, in the form of Deptford-based Upside Down Records.

Earlier this year, Sheffield’s Gut Level launched an emergency fundraising appeal to cover the final building work required to open a new venue.
