Birkenhead Central Library celebrates 90th anniversary – Birkenhead News

Birkenhead Central Library celebrated its 90th birthday on Thursday 18th July with a special invite-only event.

A rock choir and a Swing era band entertained guests as the building celebrated its birthday, which just happened to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the opening of the Queensway, the first Mersey Tunnel.

In fact it was no coincidence at all… the construction of the ‘new’ Birkenhead Central Library and the first Mersey Tunnel were intrinsically linked.

Not only were they opened on the same day by His Majesty King George V – 18 July 1934 – but funding for the library was provided by the Mersey Common Tunnel Committee as compensation for the loss of Birkenhead Library, funded by Andrew Carnegie, which opened in 1909, located on Market Place South, which had to be demolished to make way for the entrance to the Queensway Tunnel.
