Live M1 traffic updates as ‘police incident’ closes motorway in both directions

The M1 has been closed in both directions this afternoon as police deal with a road incident.

According to traffic management system Inrix, the M1 is currently closed between junction 40 of the A638 Wakefield Road and junction 41 of the A650 Royston Hill. Congestion is currently building up to junction 39, both northbound and southbound.

This runs from 1.45pm. It is not yet known if anyone was injured in the incident.

The nature of the incident is also unknown. Inrix said: “M1 closed in both directions, traffic backed up due to police incident from J40 A638 Wakefield Road (Ossett / Wakefield) to J41 A650 Royston Hill (Carrgate). Congestion to J39 (Wakefield / Durkar) northbound and J39 (Wakefield / Durkar) southbound.

“Ongoing since around 1:45 p.m. Diversion – via A650 via Tingley, A653, B6128 to Ossett and A638 before rejoining at J40 southbound and via A638 passing Ossett, B6128, A653 and M62 before re-joining M1 northbound. Follow the empty square symbol.
