Is a young Manchester City full-back destined to play in midfield?

Ever since he burst onto the scene, Rico Lewis has shown his immense ability. The technical and tactical ability of Manchester City’s young full-back is such that he appears at home playing in midfield. But is Rico Lewis destined to one day play in the middle of the field? This appears to be a realistic possibility based on what he has already shown at Manchester City.

What stands out in the game of the young Manchester City full-back is his ability to play in tight spaces. Lewis showed that each walked out on the stage as a world champion. He thrived as an inverted defender. Lewis’ intelligence has also allowed him to become a useful midfield option in City’s build-up game. The roles Lewis was asked to play by Pep Guardiola were ones that more experienced players struggled with. It’s clear that Rico Lewis is destined for big things in the game.

A move to midfield may be the key to Lewis establishing himself as a key player at Manchester City. While City are well stocked in midfielders, there is always room for another intelligent player in midfield. Rico Lewis fits this mold. Lewis is ready for more responsibility, that much is clear. He can get that if he plays primarily in midfield next season and beyond. It’s also something Lewis is aiming for in the future, based on a new interview.

In an interview with Jack Gaughan for the Daily Mail, Rico Lewis spoke about his desire to one day play in midfield. Lewis told Gaughan that he sees himself playing in the midfield one day. He told Jack Gaughan: “In my mind, I want to be more of a no. 8. A little more attacking. You have to make a decision about what kind of player you want to be. Maybe it’s a matter of age wanting to be more involved in assisting and scoring. Matches are largely won and lost in midfield.

Based on his goals and talent, it looks like Rico Lewis is destined to play in midfield. Whether it’s next season or beyond remains to be seen.
