Last season, he was loaned out to Serie A – now Serie B – strugglers Frosinone in a bid to gain first-team experience. He did just that and impressed several European suitors with a respectable return of 11 goals and three assists while the team was. relegated from the first division of Italy.

His elegant yet effective style has drawn comparisons to Argentine counterparts Angel Di Maria and Paulo Dybala. Speaking to Italian publication TMW in 2023, his agent said: “The comparison has been made with Di Maria, but Fideo is already an established and exceptional player, he is a World Champion. He and Dybala are very strong players, while Mati is Mati. He is the second best player for completed dribbles in the whole of Serie A and has only played four games. If he had played six, he might have been first.

“It’s normal for the whole world to want to compare one player with another and to better understand his qualities, but today it’s not good to do it. Matias is a footballer, he likes football. When he’s not playing, he’s playing. He’s not sleeping, he has a huge love for this game.”
