The Met Office’s verdict on when the warm spell will ‘end’ in Greater Manchester

The Met Office has given its verdict on how long the hot weather will last in Greater Manchester as August approaches.

Highs of 28C were forecast for Manchester today, with some areas of the UK facing their hottest day of the year so far. A high temperature of 31.9C was recorded at St James’s Park in central London, surpassing the previous record of 30.5C seen in June.

But if you were hoping for continued warmer temperatures, you may be disappointed. According to the Met Office, the “peak” of this week’s heat wave will be today, with temperatures expected to drop a good few degrees again over the next couple of days, with a chance of rain over the weekend.

MET spokesman Grahame Madge told the Manchester Evening News: “The forecast temperature for the Manchester area is around 28C. Some areas can even go up a degree or two more than this.

“Today is forecast to be the peak day of this mini spell of warmer temperatures. Tomorrow equivalent values are expected to be around 5°C lower, reaching around 23°C.

“Rain can be expected tomorrow, especially in the second half of the day, and this will herald a return to more unsettled conditions. However, there are still brighter spells in the forecast for the North West for the next few days and early next week. .”

The Met Office said it was likely to remain very warm overnight on Friday before things cool down over the weekend. Some areas of the UK may experience thunderstorms overnight on Saturday, forecasters have warned.

Saturday’s highest temperature will be 28 or 29 degrees, with the hottest spells likely to be seen in the east and south-east of England. On Sunday, the weather will feel cooler and fresher, but will still be warm and mostly dry.

Looking at the national picture, Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said: “Lots of people will probably be heading to the beach this weekend, or maybe going to outdoor festivals, or maybe walking in national parks.

“It’s going to be a mix of weather on offer this weekend, so I think the main takeaway is that Sunday will be the drier of the two days this weekend and more comfortable to be outdoors for a period of time.”

He added: “If you really like warm and sunny weather then I would definitely make the most of today. We’ll see quite a change this weekend.”

Next week will be cooler, the Met Office said, with some dry spells in the south and temperatures in the mid-20s. There will also be some showers, mainly in the north-west of the UK, including Scotland and Northern Ireland.
