Match report as Wigan Warriors Wheelchair Reserves beat Halifax Panthers Wheelchair Reserves at Robin Park Leisure Center on Saturday morning.

A bright start from the Warriors saw them open up an 18-0 lead with tries from Toby Burton-Carter, Dan Dutson and Mark Williams. The third of those tries was the pick of the bunch, with Dutson and Tom Welch showing excellent handling skills to corner Williams. After scoring the first, Burton-Carter also converted all three tries.

The Panthers were next on the scoreboard with Finlay O’Neill hitting the gap and evading the forwards on his way to the line.

Having only been on the pitch for a few minutes, Leila Hamrang was given space out wide and managed to cross the line after receiving the pass from Dutson, scoring her first try for the Club.

In the dying moments of the half, the home side’s defense came to a halt to allow O’Neill to score his second. Like his previous attempt, he was unable to add the extra, so the score was 24-8 at halftime in favor of the Warriors.

It was Fax who started the second half stronger, scoring two more tries to reduce the deficit to just 4 points. A Nathaniel Wright try plus a Jack Stockton penalty try helped set up a tense final quarter.

Taking their opponent’s comeback in stride, Wigan regained their composure and set out to come home with a wet sail. Playing the ball with speed, Welch was able to give Dutson an easy score with the defense nowhere to be found.

Doubling his number, Burton-Carter benefited from more elegant handling and was able to turn around the outside of the defense to score in the left corner.

Sealing the win, Welch initially crashed over the try line to add his name to the scoresheet before slotting over the crossbar to make the final score 40-20 for the Warriors.
