One person dies after an incident at Surbiton station affected main train lines

One person has died following an incident at Surbiton railway station.

A victim on the tracks was reported to police in Victoria Road just before 2.10pm today (July 22).

Crews from the London Ambulance Service also attended and the person was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

National Rail confirmed on X (officially known as Twitter) that lines between Wimbledon and New Malden were closed as the incident was dealt with.

The lines have since reopened, but trains are still being canceled and delayed by up to 70 minutes.

The incident also affected trains in London Waterloo, with many services also cancelled.

South Western Railway is urging commuters to check before they travel as disruption is expected until the end of today.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “Officers were called to Surbiton station at 2.09pm today (July 22) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended, but unfortunately one person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner.”
