Full list of 213 Carpetright branches to close after ‘rescue deal’

Carpetright has been bailed out by a rescue move by retail competitor Tapi, but the move will result in the closure of more than 200 stores and the loss of more than 1,000 jobs. Flooring company Tapi has agreed to acquire the Carpetright brand and intellectual property, as well as two warehouses and 54 stores in a pre-packaged management agreement.

Administrators PwC say the deal will retain more than 308 existing jobs at Carpetright. However, the majority of the company, including its head office in Purfleet, Essex, will not be saved by the decision.

Carpetright began the process of appointing administrators earlier this month after it faced low demand and a significant cyber attack in April. Before it went into insolvency, the firm employed 1,852 people and had 273 outlets in the UK.

An immediate layoff notice will be given to 1,018 employees at stores not included in the bailout deal.

PwC joint managing director Zel Hussain said: “The sale of stores and the brand to Tapi has saved over 300 jobs and gives the Carpetright brand the chance to continue and flourish under its new ownership. However, it is deeply saddened that there will be redundancies for the rest of the workforce,” reports Wales Online.

He added: “We are committed to helping those affected and will ensure redundancy claims are processed as quickly as possible.”

Administrators announced that orders placed at stores now earmarked for closure “cannot be honored” and advised customers to contact their card providers to secure a refund. Tapi, established in 2015 by Lord Harris of Peckham, who is also the founder of Carpetright, has seen rapid growth over the years, boasting around 175 stores across the UK.

Jeevan Karir, managing director of Tapi Carpets and Floors, commented: “Our aim initially was to try to save all of Carpetright. However, as we analyzed the details of the situation, we quickly determined that saving the entire business was not viable. .”
