Primary school children enjoy reading at Ealing Broadway – EALING.NEWS – The Voice of Ealing 7 Cities

More than 245 primary school children from Ealing took part in storytelling sessions at Ealing Broadway shopping center as part of a project to inspire a love of reading.

The event was organized and hosted by Ealing Broadway shopping center as part of the Young Readers Programme, which was created by the centre’s owner British Land and the National Literacy Trust to encourage children to read outside the classroom.

According to the National Literacy Trust, only 40% of children and young people in Ealing say they enjoy reading in their spare time.

Pupils from Oldfield Primary, West Twyford Primary and West Acton Primary saw a performance by a professional storyteller and took part in a range of activities including a quiz in Ealing Library and film trailer viewings in the Ealing Project Cinema.

Each child also received a book of their choice to take home for free.

The initiative, now in its 13th year, has seen more than 2,804 school children take part in Ealing and more than 8,400 books donated.

Andrew Rollings, Center Director at Ealing Broadway said: “It’s such a rewarding initiative, hearing how the children are inspired by the stories and activities and seeing how excited they are to take their own book home. This is a program that truly makes a difference and we are so excited to be a part of it for another brilliant year.”

Martin Galway, head of school programs at the National Literacy Trust said: “Our aim is to inspire a lifelong love of books and reading, which in turn will give them the essential literacy and life skills that they need to succeed and achieve their own goals.”
