Brockwell Park is ready for summer

Lambeth Council’s parks team have been hard at work on the maintenance and improvement program for the park which lies between Herne Hill and Tulse Hill.

The Brockwell Park event area hosted the free community event Lambeth Country Show in June, welcoming over 120,000 people, as well as six ticketed events in late May and early June. Heavy rain during one event affected some grass sections.

Those affected areas have now been almost completely repaired, following work paid for by Brockwell Live, which hosted the events and ran the Lambeth Country Show in partnership with the council.

The final planting of the grass seed is being completed this week and should see results soon. This week the council is also upgrading a football pitch in the park with a new type of grass seed which promises to create an even better playing surface for local youth teams.

Running the Lambeth Country Show in partnership has saved the council £700,000 and helped keep it a free community event. A further £200,000 from the partnership is being invested in Brockwell Park for works to restore a Victorian clock tower, restore timber shelters and other landscaping projects. These are some of the direct and indirect financial benefits that the festival season brings to the park.

Lambeth Council invests £500,000 a year in maintaining Brockwell Park, which has won numerous awards, including a Keep Britain Tidy Green Flag in line with the international standard for high quality parks and green spaces, as well as several London Awards in Bloom.

Once restoration work is completed this week, some further work is to be undertaken after the summer break to ensure the grass is back to its best.

Progress on the remaining recovery work and further improvements will be closely monitored over the next three months and a community session will be held after the summer.
