Liskeard-based alternative network operator and UK ISP Wildanet, which is rolling out gigabit-capable full fiber broadband (FTTP) in the South West of England, has boosted connectivity at Cornwall Newquay Airport by deploying a new “flashing” public WiFi network to replace the previous and somewhat slower service.

The work is said to be part of Wildanet’s wider partnership with Cornwall Newquay Airport, which will see their engineers work to “upgrade and modernize critical data connectivity infrastructure across the facility and its systems”.

According to the information, Wildanet is said to have created a high-capacity physical network throughout the airport property, allowing for easy upgrades and expansions in the future. Strategically placed access points then provide “comprehensive coverage in all areas of the airport terminal and waiting areas“, including outside the airport terminal, allowing customers to connect and use the services from the moment they arrive at the car park.

WiFi is said to be free and “unlimited” for passengers to use.

Helen Wylde-Archibald, CEO of Wildanet, said:

“Cornwall Newquay Airport is an iconic business for Cornwall and as a Cornwall company we are proud to partner with the airport and support its growth by designing and implementing innovative connectivity solutions for the benefit of passengers and wider airport operations.”

Sam O’Dwyer, MD of Cornwall Airport Newquay, said:

“This significant upgrade not only improves the passenger experience, but also enhances our operational capabilities, ensuring that Cornwall Newquay Airport is firmly on the front foot for both passenger comfort and technological advancement.”

Wildanet, which originally started life as a fixed wireless ISP in the same area, has spent the last few years implementing Fiber to the premises (FTTP) throughout the region – especially in rural Cornwall. In January 2023 they also secured a £36m broadband contract powered by the Gigabit project to cover more than 19,250 premises in the county (here) which was followed in April 2024 of a £41.2m contract to connect 16,800 premises across the rest of the country. Cornwall and Isles of Scilly (here).

NOTE: Wildanet is backed by a £100m investment from Gresham House and mainly focus their deployments on parts of Cornwall and Devon. The company is home to 220 employees (double what they had 18 months ago).
