FE News | The Leicester College student is a finalist in the national SkillELECTRIC competition

Leicester College student Fabian Maciejewski(@LeicesterColl) reached the finals of this year’s SkillELECTRIC national competition in November.

The event is part of the WorldSkills UK competition network and is designed to promote and showcase high standards and skills in the electrical industry.

Fabian is studying the T Level Building Services Engineering – Electrical Installation Specialism course at Leicester College. At the qualification sessions, he took part in an online, interactive, application-based task that tested skills related to health and safety, inspection and testing, regulations, electrical principles and installation practices and procedures. This year’s competition includes a new electric vehicle charging task alongside the successful photovoltaic task from last year’s final.

Fabian was one of eight top scoring entrants and now progresses to the UK Grand Final in November and beyond that could have the chance to represent Great Britain at the Electrical Installations event at WorldSkills Shanghai in 2026 .

Fabian Maciejewski said:

“Although I had the support of my teachers who nominated me for the competition, I initially felt a bit insecure in the qualifying round as I was on a full-time course against many apprentices who had more experience on site. However, I was determined to get at least a place in the top three, and being one of the fastest to successfully complete the challenge, I was shocked when I received the news that I had qualified for the final!

“I’m so proud of myself for making it this far and words can’t describe how much I’m looking forward to going to the final. My tutors at Leicester College have been so supportive and I wouldn’t be there without them.”

Phil Cox, Electrical Engineering Program Director at Leicester College, added:

“This is a significant development as the competition was previously for apprentices and indeed Fabian was up against apprentices and a competitor from the Royal Engineers. Fabian is the first person to enter the UK skills competition as a T-level learner and exemplifies the team’s hard work and commitment to developing learners’ skills on a full-time, adult evening programme.”

The event is organized by the National Electrotechnical Training (NET) charity and has the Electric Center, NICEIC and Scolmore Group as delivery partners. Alongside SkillELECTRIC, around 50 other national WorldSkills competition finals will take place that week at nine venues across Greater Manchester, involving over 400 competitors.

SkillELECTRIC is the only way for young electricians to progress to European and international electrical installation competitions through the WorldSkills UK network.

WorldSkills selects the best of the best of the best apprentices and trainees in the UK. Competitors undergo a rigorous accelerated development program designed by experts. Regardless of the stage of the development program an individual reaches, the training they complete is extremely beneficial to the apprenticeship or training program and to the development of employability skills.
