Leeds United were linked with a move for Sammie Szmodics from Blackburn Rovers this week, but it has since been played down.

Leeds are likely to see Crysencio Summerville leave the club this summer and with that comes the concern that the goals could dry up in Daniel Farke’s side as a result.

Logic dictates that the club would then look for someone to replace Summerville’s goalscoring side, dipping into the Championship market for a new signing.

Leeds ‘formalise’ interest in signing Sammie Szmodics

talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook has claimed that Leeds have started to step up their interest in signing Sammie Szmodics from Blackburn this summer.

The Rovers striker ended the season with 27 goals and the Golden Boot to his name as he fired John Eustace’s side to survive on the final day.

Leeds’ reported interest comes alongside that of Premier League side Ipswich Town, who have already had two bids rejected.

Do Leeds have the best full-back pairing in the league?

YEP: Szmodics not a target for Leeds this summer

The Yorkshire Evening Post has since moved to play down links between Leeds and Blackburn’s top-scoring striker.

They share that the striker is not actually a target for Leeds this summer as he bids to secure promotion at the second time of asking:

“Club sources have dismissed suggestions that the Whites have ‘formalised their interest’ in the Republic of Ireland striker, who scored 33 goals last season, 27 of which came in the Championship.”

Sammie Szmodics is not a good fit for Leeds’ current attack

Looking at goals alone would be an unwise measure to judge Szmodics’ ability to fit in at Leeds, as his role is a massive contrast to what he would have done at Leeds.

There’s a reason he’s not a target, because the qualities he undoubtedly possesses and showed at Blackburn last season wouldn’t translate to Leeds.

Playing on the counter-attack with acres of space, not holding the ball, no pressure and barely linking play with his back to goal, Szmodics is a great player in his own right, but the opposite of what Leeds need up front.

If Ipswich is his destination, he deserves the move given how he and the Tractor Boys are already playing the likes of Conor Chaplin.
