The S&P/TSX composite index falls on Tuesday morning, US markets rise

TORONTO — Losses in the energy sector sent Canada’s main stock index lower in late trading on Tuesday, while U.S. stock markets rose.

The S&P/TSX composite index fell 50.37 points to 22,822.28.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 29.98 points to 40,445.42. The S&P 500 rose 16.88 points to 5,581.29, while the Nasdaq composite rose 106.17 points to 18,113.73.

The Canadian dollar traded at 72.63 US cents, compared with 72.70 US cents on Monday.

The September crude oil contract was down $1.59 at $76.81 a barrel and the August natural gas contract was down six cents at $2.23 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract was down $12.40 at $2,407.10 an ounce, and the September copper contract fell three cents to $4.17 a pound.
