Poveda, 24, is currently a free agent following his release from Leeds United. He spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and the Owls are looking to bring him back on a permanent basis this summer.

However, new reports claim that Sunderland are also keen on a deal and he is said to be a prime target for the Black Cats for the remainder of this transfer window.

A solid addition

Poveda struggled to find momentum last season, and his numbers so far in his senior career aren’t setting the world on fire. However, he has shown himself to be a very tidy player and if managed correctly could be a valuable asset to either the Owls or the Black Cats this summer.

He had a loan spell at Blackpool in the Championship where he made 24 appearances and contributed three goals, but ideally now needs a permanent club to settle into and allow him to fully focus on his football.

Sheffield Wednesday have already been busy this summer and the pre-existing relationship with Danny Rohl and the club may help them in their bid to bring Poveda back to Hillsborough this summer, however Sunderland would be an attractive place for many players and it is certainly difficult . competition for Owls.

Next season

Sheffield Wednesday retained their Championship status by actually beating Sunderland on the final day of last season.

The Owls have already made some big moves this summer and are expected to climb the second table quite quickly next season.

Sunderland finished in 16th place. Their campaign was quite a loss and not much went for the club on and off the pitch.

However, under the guidance of new boss Regis Le Bris, there is renewed optimism that they can start to climb higher and push back into the top half.

They still have work to do this transfer window, however with only one signing on the pitch so far this window.
