Adam Johnson: Man freed on bail again as inquest into ice hockey star’s death continues

A man arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the death of ice hockey star Adam Johnson has been bailed again by police.

Johnson, 29, suffered a neck injury after coming into contact with an opposing player’s skate blade while playing for Nottingham Panthers against Sheffield Steelers on October 28 last year. Doctors performed CPR on him and he was taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

South Yorkshire Police said in a statement: “Officers investigating the death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson in Sheffield have re-bailed a man in connection with the investigation.

“Adam, 29, suffered a life-threatening injury during a match between Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers on 28 October 2023. He was sadly pronounced dead in hospital. An autopsy later concluded that she died of a blunt force trauma to her neck.

“On November 14, 2023, a man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. He was later released on bail. Today (Tuesday, May 14) he was bailed again until June 26, 2024.

“Adam’s loved ones remain at the forefront of our minds as this complex investigation continues. If there are any developments before the new bail expiry date, they will be proactively published on the South Yorkshire Police website.”

Johnson was laid to rest in his hometown of Hibbing, Minnesota, in November, and his family paid tribute with an emotional obituary. They said: “Adam loved the outdoors and the simple things in life. He enjoyed yard work, fishing, golfing with friends, playing in the Iron Ice hockey tournament, projects around the house, reading, following scholarships and his favorite was listening. the music.

“Adam especially enjoyed his quiet coffee time with his fiance Ryan, dreaming of their future and spending mornings together.

“Adam liked to live a slower life and took pleasure in the small, everyday things. The simple pleasures Adam enjoyed were grinding his coffee beans by hand, seeing the colors of every sunset, sitting by the lake by a fire with a glass of his favorite red wine, and trying new dinner recipes, but more more than anything, he loved a good deal on Costco steaks.

“He was many things to many people, but those who were lucky enough to be loved by Adam knew that he was caring, patient and truly genuine. He loved his fiancee, family and friends more than anything. His loving and quiet demeanor will be forever missed.”

Nottingham Panthers retired Johnson’s number 47 as a tribute to him and played a memorial match for him. Head coach Jonathan Paredes said: “Adam was just a nice person – a good man. I really enjoyed coaching him. I enjoyed our talks that we had, the long talks that he- I had before. He was a great teammate and a great person in the room.”
