Matt Peet spoke to the media ahead of Friday’s Betfred Super League top-of-the-table clash against Warrington Wolves at the Brick Community Stadium.

The Warriors will be looking to bounce back from a narrow defeat at Hull FC in Round 18 of Betfred Super League action as they return to The Brick Community Stadium to take on Warrington Wolves.

Reflecting on the Warriors’ first loss in April, Peet said: “We don’t get too excited when we play well or when we have good days and equally, although it hurt at the weekend, we’re looking forward to learning and responding. That’s what we focus on.

“In every rugby match, the start is critical. There are so many things you have to understand right from the start – the basics – from which you can build the game behind it. We obviously didn’t do that well last week and I think us and Warrington will be looking to do that this week.”

Playing against Wigan on Friday, Peet said: “There’s a real energy in the city at the moment. I feel our last two home games against Leigh and St Helens, we had a fantastic feeling around the stadium, in the Fan Village and in the city.

“Our fans have loved the way we’ve been going and with the recent things going on in town it feels like there’s a bit of momentum at the moment. I hope our players put in a quality performance to get our fans into the game as Warrington will also contribute to a great atmosphere.”

Wigan face Warrington for the third time this season, having played once at the Halliwell Jones Stadium and once in the Betfred Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium, with the Warriors emerging victorious on both occasions.

Of this week’s opponents, who sit two points behind the Warriors in the league standings, Peet said: “We just know they’re a quality outfit. We saw in the first game that they have that strength in depth and I feel like the young players that have come into their team have taken their team to another level in terms of depth.

“It seems any players wearing that Warrington shirt play with real commitment on both sides of the ball and obviously have star talent too. We are looking forward rather than backward and we know we have a massive challenge ahead of us.”

Peet added: “I always feel that if a team defends really well and has talented players then they have chances in every game they play and that’s why Warrington have been so successful this year.”
