Name the motorcyclist and passenger who died in the A61 crash

A motorcyclist and a passenger who were among six people killed in a crash near Wakefield have been named as husband and wife.

Christopher Barton, 56, and Janine Barton, 48, were described by their son as “a loving and caring mum and dad who always put me before everyone else”.

The couple recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary, police said.

Shane Roller, 33, his partner Shannen Morgan, 30, and their daughters Rubie and Lillie Morgan-Roller, aged nine and four, were also killed in the crash between a Ford Focus and a Sunday motorbike on the A61.

The couple’s eldest daughter, who was named locally Poppie, 11, is now left without parents or siblings after losing her “whole world in an instant”.

Police described the collision as an “absolutely tragic incident” and appealed for witnesses to come forward with dashcam footage.

A family friend wrote following the news: “My heart is absolutely broken, I’m lost, I’m numb. It just doesn’t seem real that all four of you are gone.

A family member posted on Facebook: “Honestly, I am at a loss for words. I am heartbroken, I will miss you all. It absolutely broke my heart and absolutely shattered both sides of the families.

“You all have a heart of gold and you will be missed madly! My heart goes out to Shannen’s family and mine, we are in absolute shock.

Surveillance footage showed a burnt-out car surrounded by a heavy police presence on the A61 between Wakefield and Barnsley.

The Ford Focus is believed to have burst into flames after colliding with the motorbike, and images from the scene show the damaged wreckage of the vehicle on the side of the road.

Debris, believed to be from the motorcycle, could be seen strewn across the middle of the road.
