The village’s unpopular housing plan is drawing nearly 100 objections as a decision nears

Almost 100 objections have been lodged against a housing scheme which is due to be decided this week. Residents have flooded the council with letters of concern about a proposed 128-home development off Snells Nook Lane in Nanpantan.

Among their fears, they claimed the development would exacerbate existing traffic problems. One opponent said the traffic situation was already “very dangerous” for residents.

Other residents have raised concerns about the character of the village, which is just on the edge of Loughborough. “Nanpantan is a beautiful part of Loughborough, this will destroy the village,” said one resident. Another feared it would change Nanpantan from “a community of small developments and individual houses to a community completely dominated by one large development”.

In total, 97 objections were made to the scheme, which listed a range of concerns including adding more cars to “severely congested” roads, the scale of the development, the impact on views of nearby Burleigh Wood, the loss of green space. and potential damage to wildlife. The scheme, submitted by William Davis, will be decided by Charnwood Borough Council’s planning committee later this week.

A report by planning officers recommended committee members agree to delegate the final decision to the head of planning as long as they were satisfied with the scheme. It adds: “A significant number of concerns have been raised by local residents about the effect of the proposal on the safety of motorways and the local road network.

“Based on the evidence submitted and the response of the Local Highway Authority, it is considered that the development would not produce an unacceptable impact on the safety of the highways, and the cumulative residual impacts on the road network would not be severe, subject to the requested provisions. As such, development should not be impeded or denied on highway land.”

The report also revealed that 38 affordable homes will be provided by the scheme. Officers said: “There is a significant recognized need for affordable housing in the borough.”
