Sheffield United target appears surplus to requirements due to rules – Blades held talks

There is a claim in the Turkish media that Besiktas will sell Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer due to the foreign Super Lig ruling.

The 30-year-old has been linked with a move to Sheffield United in recent weeks as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of next season.

Sporx are announcing today that the former Arsenal and Liverpool striker has been ruled out of Besiktas’ pre-season camp in Slovenia as he is no longer seen as part of their plans.

The Turkish FA recently increased the number of foreigners a Super Lig team is allowed in the squad to fourteen. However, the Black Eagles have recently brought in Rafa Silva, Paulista and Ciro Immobile.

Subsequently, the Istanbul club now have 19 foreign players on their books, with Oxlade-Chamberlain considered one of the surplus five.

Sheffield United are likely to have their heart set on these latest developments following claims they are in transfer talks to sign the player.

There have been reports this week that Bramhall Lane is a likely destination for Oxlade-Chamberlain, but his former club Southampton are also said to be in the running to sign him.

Oxlade-Chamberlain made 30 appearances for Besiktas last season, scoring 4 goals. He is contracted to the club until June 2026.
