Make the most of life in West Bridgford – Nottingham Local News

We hear a lot today about the problems facing society: an aging population, mental health issues, austerity, loneliness, problems with the NHS – sometimes the list seems endless – so it’s good to know that in the West Bridgford area we have something that could can help.

For a modest annual cost (£15), those without a full-time job can join WBu3a and get more out of life – whether it’s improving their physical health or mental wellbeing, finding a new interest or simply and simply enjoy good company while doing something they love or want to learn. The organization has over 60 different groups that meet weekly or monthly and cover a wide range of activities and interests.

As the brighter days arrived, there was no shortage of outings to enjoy through WBu3a. The local history group visited the Richard III Center in Leicester and found it fascinating. The story of the end of the Plantagenet era, the mystery of the princes murdered in the tower and the story of Richard III whose reign and life ended near us at Bosworth made for a splendid day. Or, if cycling is your thing, you could enjoy one of the twice monthly Cycling Group outings; trips to Rutland Water, the Manifold Valley and the lovely countryside and lanes around Elvaston Castle have all been enjoyed in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, members of the WBu3a singing group for fun were in good voice – lifting their spirits and welcoming Spring at their twice-monthly meetings. The group blows the blues playing songs from all eras; from pop to musicals and music hall to disco. Rocking through songs to bring back happy memories and make you feel good. Joined occasionally by u3a guitar group Greythorn, there is no solo song so everyone can relax and enjoy the camaraderie of at least 40 other people; who could resist a few choruses and a bit of arm waving to Sweet Caroline or recalling The Beatles, Shirley Bassey, Abba, Petula Clark or Frank Sinatra to name but a few!

If, however, an active mind and learning new “things” is your inclination, you might be interested
in the Science for All group. As the name suggests, it’s for everyone, not just scientists! Meeting once a month the only requirement of the group is just an interest in learning about a variety of scientific topics. Recent meetings looked at substance abuse, blood sugar and pre-diabetes, the scientific aspects of Stonehenge, the state of the NHS and a visit to the British Geological Survey in Keyworth.

With over 700 members already making the most of life by taking advantage of what West Bridgford u3a has to offer, it’s good to know that so many are benefiting from what’s available on our doorstep.
