What would happen if Manchester City were fined for financial fair play?

What happened?

Manchester City have been accused of breaching Financial Fair Pay rules on more than 100 separate occasions between 2009 and 2018, during which they took home the Premier League trophy three times.

These rules have been put in place to ensure that all football clubs only spend as much as they earn. However, clubs have been known to circumvent these rules by hiding how much they spend or exaggerating what they earn. It is believed that by failing to provide correct and accurate financial information over the 9 seasons, these rules have been breached by Man City.

Possible consequences for Manchester City

There are a number of punishments that could be handed out to Manchester City, from points deductions to expulsion from the league. Although expulsions are an extreme punishment, no one knows what to expect given the scale of the violations. Other penalties can be found below;

  • Suspension
  • League matches are replayed
  • Compensation
  • Cancellation or refusal to register players
  • Conditional sentences
  • The club pays the costs

What does Man City do next?

Insisting his side are innocent of the allegations, City manager Pep Guardiola has vowed to stay with the team even if punished, even if it means relegation to Ligue 1. However, it’s worth noting that the most likely punishment will be a fine or point deductions.
