Cornwall IFCA announces consultation on shellfish vessel limits

Proposed changes

In the first stage, Cornwall IFCA is considering changing the maximum vessel length and introducing construction measures to regulate the capacity and capacity of shellfish vessels in the district. The current informal consultation seeks views on the preferred maximum vessel size for three vessel types and an option to ban live vessels:

  1. Monocoque
  2. Multi-hull (e.g. catamaran)
  3. Vivier

Participation and feedback

Cornwall IFCA invites all interested parties, including individuals and businesses involved in fishing, to share their views on the proposed changes. Feedback on potential financial impacts – positive or negative – and any suggestions for adjustments to the proposed restrictions are especially welcome.

How to answer

To participate in the consultation, interested parties can complete the response form available on IFCA Cornwall’s website. For those who prefer to respond in writing, a paper form can be requested by calling the IFCA office in Cornwall on 01872 324284. It is essential that you use the official response forms due to data processing restrictions.

The consultation period ends on 8 August 2024. For further questions or discussions about the proposals, interested parties are encouraged to contact Cornwall IFCA before the consultation closes.

This consultation is a crucial step in shaping a new shellfish regulation and addressing the sustainability of shellfishing in Cornwall. The feedback collected will inform the development of effective and fair regulations to protect these vital marine resources.
