A man sexually assaulted and attempted to rape a woman who was looking for a taxi

A man is facing a “lengthy” jail term after he picked up a woman looking for a taxi and sexually assaulted her. Ghulan Mohammed, 36, who was not a taxi driver, was driving around Leicester city center looking for a prostitute.

He saw a woman who was “severely disabled” and did not know much English, Leicester Crown Court heard today (Friday, July 26). He convinced her to get into his car and then drove to a series of remote locations, sexually assaulting and attempting to rape her before returning her to Leicester city centre.

The woman tried to escape when Mohammed, of Princess Street, Burton on Trent, stopped at a petrol station and tried to ask staff for help. But the ordeal only ended after her friends, who were able to track her phone, found her in Mohammed’s car, covered in mud and covered in bruises, her bank cards stolen by Mohammed.

Mohammed denied anything happened without the woman’s consent and it was only after a week-long trial at Leicester Crown Court that he was convicted by a jury of four counts of sexual assault and one count of attempted rape. He was also found guilty of theft and four counts of fraud for stealing her bank card and using it during and after the long ordeal.

The jury heard that key evidence in the case came from a translator app the victim had on her phone, which recorded some of their conversations. The footage included the woman asking Mohammed if he was a taxi driver and later shouting at him to stop what he was doing and demanding his clothes back.

Mohammed, who has been in prison since his conviction, returned to court today (Friday) where he was due to be sentenced. However, Luc Chignell, representing Mohammed, asked the court to adjourn sentence for three months for a psychiatric report to be carried out.

Mr Chignell said: “The justice lies in the fact that he is allowed to present this mitigation.” Recorder Jacob Hallam KC agreed to an adjournment and the case is due back in court for sentencing later this year.
