Canada Soccer chief investigates ‘systemic ethical failings’ amid spying scandal

PARIS — The head of Canada Soccer said it is investigating a potential “systemic ethical deficiency” as the organization deals with a drone spying scandal at the Paris Olympics.

Canada Soccer chief executive and general secretary Kevin Blue said the future of women’s coach Bev Priestman is pending the outcome of the organization’s review.

Priestman was suspended and removed from the women’s team after a member of her staff was caught using a drone to spy on closed training sessions held by the New Zealand team.

Blue said the female players on the Canadian team were not involved in any unethical behavior.

Canadian Olympic Committee chief executive David Shoemaker told reporters in Paris that Priestman was likely aware that drones were being used to spy on New Zealand’s practices in France. Priestman denied the allegation.

Blue also said there was an incident with the men’s national team at the Copa America, but did not elaborate.

Defending Olympic champion Canada beat New Zealand 2-1 in their opening game on Thursday.
