‘His pub, his rules’: Punters weigh in on sports bar dress code

A pub which told customers they must adhere to a strict dress code has caused a stir on social media, with people divided over the rights and wrongs of the new rules. Earlier this week Lottie Dod sports bar in Moreton introduced a dress code which will apply every weekday after 6pm. The dress code states that customers will not be allowed to enter after this time wearing tracksuits, sports shorts, work clothes or caps.

A post on the pub’s Facebook page said: “Here at The Lottie Dod we implement a dress code after 6pm every day. We have advertised this on numerous occasions, but some people still insist on trying to enter. Our dress code is not the tracksuit. , sports shorts, work clothes or caps after 18:00. Thank you all for your continued support!

The pub later clarified that it would not ask anyone wearing “work clothes” to leave the pub at 6pm, but would ban new customers from entering after 6pm if they did not comply with the dress code. The rules have sparked a huge debate on social media. Some people have argued that it could “demonize” certain jobs by targeting tradesmen with workwear.

One punter wrote under the pub’s Facebook post: “I just feel like demonizing one demographic is a bit over the top. I guess this means that traditionals are not allowed in work clothes (after 6, they can stay before 6), but estate agents, opticians, bank employees, lawyers, etc. will they be fine (I assume) due to the nature of their work clothes?”

On the ECHO’s Facebook page, many readers agreed with him. Sue Appleton said: “It should be open to everyone. Everyone’s money is the same, no matter how you dress!”

Rachel Leigh added: “What the hell next? You’re just going for a drink, not a three-course meal.”

However, there was also a lot of support for the pub on Facebook. Sue Whitby said: “Those who say it’s a sports bar, yes it is. However, it also focuses on musical performances and other entertainment. If you were to play in clubs, you wouldn’t be dressed in sports clothes”.

Mark Brown New said: “People should follow bar rules and make an effort to look smart.”
