Somerset teenager Archie Vaughan had a debut to remember as he was part of a winning side against Kent.

The son of former England captain Michael Vaughan was making his county debut at the age of 18, fresh from appearing on England Under-19 duty.

And Vaughan certainly had an interesting experience, bowling six tidy overs of off-spin for just 16 runs, before being unluckily run out by going back without facing a ball when Australia’s Charlie Stobo tipped Andy Umeed’s drive on the stumps.

On a day where the remaining four teams yet to play in the competition played for the first time, two picked up their first wins.

Hampshire, thanks largely to Ben Brown’s 139 not out, and Somerset, for whom opener Umeed hit a ton, were both Group A winners.

“I felt awful that Archie Vaughan was dropped back without facing after bowling so well,” Umeed told BBC Radio Somerset.

“It was actually a pretty good shot that I played and just one of those things. I just tried to get it out of my mind and focus on completing the task and getting a hundred.”

Warwickshire List A skipper Ed Barnard had a personal One-Day Cup campaign to remember in 2023 when he top-scored with 616 and took 11 wickets.

And the former Worcestershire and England Lions all-rounder is clearly intent on doing it all again with both bat and ball in 2024.

After hitting a match-winning century to beat Essex at Chelmsford on Wednesday, this time he played with the ball, taking 4-21 as fellow seamer Craig Miles claimed three wickets as holders Leicestershire were bowled out for just 88 to lose by eight wickets. Bears in group B.

The other Group B winners on the day were Nottinghamshire, who crashed out after losing their opening game to Leicestershire.

Group A – Brown tuna set up Hampshire victory

Centurion Brown also celebrates a century of List A appearances as he reached three figures in List A cricket for the first time for Hampshire as they wrapped up a comfortable 71-point win Northamptonshire.

Jack White took three quick wickets to reduce the hosts to 25-3 in the seventh over, but Hampshire had a 118-run sixth-wicket stand between Brown and Felix Organ (59) to thank for that helped them recover from 96-5 at the post. 285-8.

The Hampshire wicketkeeper had previously only hit a white-ball hundred – 105 for his old club Sussex against Middlesex in 2021 – but Brown surpassed that.

Eddie Jack (4-29) and Tom Prest (3-41) then enjoyed career-best bowling figures as Northants were bowled out for 214.

Somerset they were made to work harder than they would have expected before eventually running out with three winners Kent at Taunton.

Joey Evison (55) and Grant Stewart (51) both hit half-centuries while Hamidullah Qadri made a quickfire 43 as Kent posted a target of 267 all out from 49 overs.

Left-arm spinner Lewis Goldsworthy returned from his loan spell with Leicestershire to claim a career-best 4-44 in List A, while seamer Alfie Ogborne weighed in with 3-58.

But former Warwickshire and Scotland opener Umeed maintained his good form in the One Day Cup.

He averaged 87.57 last summer to finish second in the country with 613, just three points behind Barnard. And he started again in similar style with an unbeaten 114.

With James Rew making 71 in a third-over stand of 121 with Umeed and England dropping Jack Leach at the end with a slog-sweep six, Somerset came home at the end with 21 balls in hand.

Group B – Barnard leads fox hunt at Leicester

Barnard didn’t take long to make an impact at Leicester as Warwickshire eased to an eight-wicket win Leicestershire in what should have been a day-night, but it was over long before the shadows lengthened.

After putting the Foxes in, Barnard took four quick wickets, including India Test star Adjinkya Rahane, to reduce the hosts to 40-4.

In addition to the three for Miles, Olly Hannon-Dalby, Will Rhodes and Jake Lintott all claimed a wicket each as Leicestershire were bowled out in just 25.4 overs.

In just the second game since the last over, former Bears fast bowler Chris Wright then took two wickets in as many balls to remove opener Barnard with the last ball of the third over and youngster Theo Wylie with the first fifth ball.

But former captain Rhodes (48*) put together an unbroken stand of 85 with England Under-19 captain Hamza Shaikh (34*) to steer his side home in 18 overs.

The visiting Bears now face a third consecutive away game in Hove on Sunday against Sussex.

Fynn Jake Hudson-Prentice received almost half of the Sussex total score of 216 while making 90 against Nottinghamshire at Nettleworth.

Freddie McCann and Jack Haynes, with his second duck in successive innings, then both went cheaply as the hosts faltered 7-2.

But Ben Slater and Haseeb Hameed helped turn things around, both hitting unbeaten tons as Notts bounced back from their opening defeat at Leicester with an eight-wicket win.

Opener Slater, who averages over 50 in List A, hit 107 while Notts skipper Hameed finished unbeaten on 101 as they shared a record partnership of 209 to erase Matt’s name Wood and David Hussey. Notts record books.
