Leeds United myth dispelled as club claim record 15,000-plus attendance

More than 15,000 of Leeds United’s new away shirts were sold in the first 24 hours on sale, breaking a club record and dispelling a myth about popular kit colours. The club said the new yellow number sold more units in the first 24 hours than any other shirt in its history.

LeedsLive understands the club’s hierarchy had to move heaven and earth with Adidas to order a yellow away shirt. The manufacturing giant and the wider industry have said that United’s yellow football shirts are not selling enough to justify their production.

The decision-makers at Elland Road hoped that positive reaction from fans on social media would translate into enough sales to give hope of future models in this colourway. If it doesn’t continue to sell well, this yellow shirt may be the last United have for a long time.

However, the fan base was in force on the first day of sales and exceeded 15,000 units. The inclusion of United’s famous ‘smiley’ badge has caused a storm among supporters.

A United statement said: “Leeds United’s new yellow away kit has proved a massive hit with the supporters. Over 15,000 shirts were sold in the first day of sales alone as fans couldn’t wait to get their hands on the latest release.

“This meant it was a record 24 hours for the club, based on all previous sales of Leeds United shirts. Inspired by the shirt worn in 1974, the yellow away shirt prominently displays the smiling emblem used at the time.

“It also features a blue peaked button collar and adidas signature 3 stripes in blue and white split on the shoulders. Leeds United’s first team wore the kit for the first time during Wednesday’s 4-1 win over Hannover 96 in Germany.”
