Huge changes are planned for Coventry’s iconic roundabout

Coventry Council is planning huge changes to an iconic city roundabout. Seven new crossings are to be built at the Blue Ribbon roundabout off the A444.

Some of these will be installed as part of the new traffic signals. All will be “toucan” crossings that can be used by both cyclists and walkers.

Another crossing could also be built near the entrance to the roundabout. This ‘parallel’ crossing – like a zebra crossing but with a cycle lane – is planned for John Wigley Way.

Details of the plans were revealed in a “notice of intent” published by the council last week, July 18. Any objections must be made before August 8, and work will be completed this autumn.

Other changes to the roundabout are planned, according to documents for a council meeting next week. These include signal improvements at crossings to assist disabled people and at roundabouts to improve journey times.

Cyclists will be separated from pedestrians on the roundabout routes, including crossings, he added. A senior councilor will be asked to approve the new separated cycle lane and pavement and crossing works at the meeting on Wednesday 31 July.

The documents revealed that work on the roundabout will begin this summer. Most of the scheme is paid for through government transport funding, but also money from nearby housing developers and Transport for West Midlands.
