Liverpool Pride kicked off in style tonight with Pride Classical, a new musical addition to the Liverpool Pride calendar. A 32-piece orchestra took to the stage at the Pier Head to perform some of the best Pride anthems of the last 50 years. Everyone was dressed in their favorite pride outfits – sequined suits and lace tops, and the crowd was buzzing as the artists took the stage.

Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears headlined the waterfront gig. He was joined by actor and musician Ashford Campbell, Halewood entertainer and RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Danny Beard and cabaret artist and musical theater performer Alison Jiear, who took a break from playing a nun in Sister Act to open the show.

Jake, best known for hits such as ‘I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’ and ‘Take Your Mama’, performed in Liverpool last year as part of the Eurovision Village. Ahead of the show, he said: “I’m delighted to be returning to Liverpool for what will be a memorable night of love, joy and unity. Pride Classical is the perfect way to start your Pride weekend in Liverpool and I can’t wait to see everyone.”

Danny entertained the crowd with ABBA songs including ‘Gimme Gimme Gimme’ and ‘Mighty Real’ by Sylvester. Revelers made the most of the two beer shacks before heading to the sunny Pier Head and enjoying classics such as Judy Garland’s Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
