Joe Hugill joins Wigan on loan from Man United

Wigan have signed striker Joe Hugill on loan from Manchester United, it has now been announced.

The 20-year-old joins Latics until the end of the 2024/25 campaign and will wear the number nine shirt after Manchester United decided he needed another loan away from the club to get some first team experience.

Hugill, who spent the second half of last season with Burton Albion, said: “I’m really excited to be here. It’s been a long time coming, but I’m over the moon to get it done and can’t wait to get started.

“Getting the number nine shirt is a huge honor and I will wear it with pride. Hopefully I can show what I can do with it.”

Wigan manager Shaun Maloney said: “I’m delighted we’ve been able to sign Joe. He will be a great addition to the group and I look forward to working with him.

“He is a hard-working number nine and has been a natural goalscorer throughout his time at Manchester United. He has a lot of strong qualities and I’m very happy to have him here.”

The boy is now 20 years old and needs to start thinking about a more permanent move from Manchester United – was sent out on loan several times over the seasons and was not given a chance at that Red Devils side.

So if he does well at Wigan – we’re sure there’s some sort of option to buy the lad at the end of the season – that could be good for the player as he needs a more permanent home rather than being sent across the country every season.

But this is a good move for Hugill.
