Search further to find historic 18th century balustrades ‘stolen’ from commercial property

About £5,000 worth of historic railings have been stolen from a repair company in Westbury.

The alleged theft happened on the evening of Tuesday, July 9, when the parts went missing from the yard of Advanced Metal Treatments, in Engineers Road, West Wilts shopping area.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “The six sections of railing were valued at around £5,000 and are of historical significance as they date back to the 18th century and were removed from Hurst Castle, Hampshire , for repairs and renovation.

“The handrails have 25mm uprights which are very corroded in places and the handrail top bar is 40mm x 20mm semi-round. They were forced to climb stairs, as can be seen in the photo of them at Hurst Castle.

“West Wilts Trading Estate has many businesses that can use CCTV and we would ask them, particularly within Engineer Road, to check for any unusual activity on the evening of July 9.”
