The departure of the Leicester City winger has been confirmed

Premier League newcomers Leicester City have confirmed the loan departure of an exciting winger, according to the club’s official website.

The Foxes are gearing up for life in the top flight again after winning promotion from the Championship last season. They haven’t been too active in the transfer window so far, with the only notable exit being Kiernan Dewbury-Hall’s move to Chelsea and the release of Kelechi Iheanacho, Marc Albrighton and Dennis Praet.

However, they have now confirmed the departure of promising young winger Silko Thomas to League One Wigan Athletic for the 2024/25 season. The 20-year-old has only been at the club for just under a year, joining from Chelsea’s academy in the 2023 summer window. He played 19 times for the club’s youth teams last season, scoring six goals.

He now links up with Latics for his first spell in senior football. Wigan’s first season back in League One last year saw them finish a disappointing 12th, failing to make a serious push for promotion despite some fine form towards the end of the season. They comfortably beat Lincoln City, ending their unbeaten run and Champions Portsmouth in the final weeks of the season.

They have been moderately active in the transfer window with notable additions including Manchester City’s Joe Hugill, Everton’s Andy Lonergan, Liverpool’s Calvin Ramsay, Exeter City’s Will Aimson and Fulham’s Tyrese Francois among others . Thomas now becomes the number nine signing for the window.

Can Thomas do it for Wigan?

Silko Thomas has the kind of raw talent and ability that managers like to get their hands on in the lower leagues. His ability to drop his shoulder and get past opposition defenders could prove vital. However, moving from academy football to League 1 is a huge step. In fact, the player appeared in his parent club’s thrashing at the hands of Wigan (7-1) in the EFL trophy, playing most of the game. He will be hoping his reunion with the club goes a little better than his first encounter.
