Leeds United have blocked Junior Firpo from taking part in this month’s Olympic Games in the Dominican Republic, the player has confirmed on social media.

Daniel Farke is doing very well to ensure there is very little of the chaos that disrupted his pre-season last summer in 2023, with a strong squad preparing for the first day of August.

There are a few possible hiccups along the way in terms of transfers, but the club are showing that they are in control of what is in their power.

Junior Firpo blocked participation in the Olympic Games in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo-born Junior Firpo made his debut for the Dominican Republic at the start of 2024 after changing his beliefs, and his nation were eyeing him in their Olympic squad.

However, it has been confirmed that the defender will not be allowed by Leeds to represent the Dominican at this month’s tournament in Paris.

Firpo took to Instagram to react to the news:

“I tried by all means given the excitement that made me live this experience and represent my country in such an important and unique event. But in the end you have to respect the decision of the club I represent.

“I wanted to thank the gentleman and his technical staff for waiting until the last minute and wish all the luck in the world to my teammates. I will cheer from home like the most”

Do Leeds have the best full-back pairing in the league?

Leeds make the right call on Farke after admitting defender

This news comes amid Farke’s post-match comments on Wednesday about Leeds’ lack of depth at full-back following a 4-1 win over Hannover 96 (via LeedsLive):

“Overall, we have three options with Junior, Jayden and Sam. Quality options, but we also know a bit about Sam’s injury resume and need to be careful.

“One thing is for sure, with only three full-backs and one slightly older one who has an injured CV, it will be difficult to survive in the Championship. It’s certainly also one of the areas that we need to be aware of and if there’s an opportunity to actually strengthen the squad, we should definitely look at it, yes.”

As things stand, Farke is not happy with the full-back depth he has, which are the three players he names above, while he apparently has Max Wöber as a versatile option, deputizing on the left in Wednesday’s second half.

So it would have been very naive of the club to sanction Firpo traveling on international duty this month when this pre-season will be vital to get an edge on promotion rivals who could be stuttering out of the blocks.

The last thing the former Barcelona man needs is more strain on his body after constant injuries, so the club are doing the right thing.

On the transfer front, Farke has made it clear he needs a new full-back – whether it’s a left or right back-up remains to be seen, with Byram covering the other side.
